Operational Support
The Greer Police Department Operational Support Team (OST) plays a vital role in ensuring the smooth functioning of the police department. The team manages a wide range of responsibilities, including animal control, dispatch, court security, detention, judicial services, and property and evidence. They also oversee the regulation of towing companies and the issuance of taxi licenses.
OST supervises property and evidence for the department. The property and evidence section of the Greer Police Department is responsible for the proper handling, storage, and documentation of all property and evidence seized by the department. This includes maintaining a secure chain of custody for all items, coordinating discovery viewings for legal teams, and ensuring that evidence is stored in a manner that supports judicial proceedings.
Animal Control
The Animal Control division of the Greer Police Department enforces legal ordinances and laws governing animals within the city. This team investigates cases of animal nuisance, abuse, and abandonment, responding to incidents reported by the community. They ensure the medical care of rescued animals and pursue legal action against owners in cases of neglect or harm.
The City of Greer operates a kennel to temporarily house and care for dogs collected by animal control until they can be reunited with their owner or transferred to Greenville County Animal Care. Greer works under contract with Greenville County Animal Care for sheltering animals if they cannot be returned to their owners.
The Greer Police Department follows Greenville County Animal Care guidelines regarding community cats, also known as feral cats. Residents experiencing issues with community cats should follow the Community Cat Diversion Program guidelines.
Animal Regulations
All dogs within the city limits must be on a leash held by a person.
For the safety of both humans and animals, pets (other than service animals) are not permitted at events in the city or at a city park during organized play or practice.
No dog shall be licensed by the city unless and until adequate proof is furnished showing the dog is currently vaccinated against rabies.
Feces
Unless the pet is on its owner’s private property, the owner or other person having control or supervision of an animal must remove promptly all feces left by the animal on any:
Parking lot
Public park
School ground or on private property
Sidewalk
Street
Feces may not be deposited in sewers or drains, whether storm or sanitary, but must be bagged and placed in a proper garbage receptacle established for public use or belonging to the owner of the animal.
