Stormwater
The City of Greer's Stormwater Management Program, led by the Stormwater Division within the Engineering Department, is dedicated to protecting local waterways from pollutants caused by construction, industrial activities, and other sources. The team collaborates with city departments and government agencies while addressing public concerns about drainage issues.
Since stormwater runoff cannot be treated like sewage, preventing pollution at its source is essential. Through strong ordinances, public education, construction site oversight, and industrial inspections, the City’s stormwater team works to safeguard water quality and preserve it for future generations.
Floodplain Management
Floodplain management in the City of Greer focuses on minimizing flood risks and ensuring responsible development in flood-prone areas. The city enforces Chapter 35 of the Flood Damage Prevention Ordinance, which requires a development permit for any work in FEMA-designated Flood Zones. Property owners can use the City's Geographic Information System (GIS) or FEMA's Flood Map Service Center to determine if their property is in a flood zone.
Regulations prohibit property improvements or repairs exceeding 50% of the home’s value without meeting current floodplain standards. This 50% threshold is cumulative over 10 years. Unpermitted work in Flood Zones can be reported to the city at (864) 801-2026.
The City participates in the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), allowing residents to obtain federally-backed flood insurance. Residents are encouraged to follow City guidelines, secure proper permits, and protect their properties through flood insurance.
