Greer City Council

Greer City Council acts as the legislative branch of the city government, as well as its policy-making body. The council also looks to the city’s goals, major projects and infrastructure improvements ranging from community growth to land use to finances and strategic planning.

Individual council members serve four-year terms and are elected by residents of the districts in which they live and represent. The exception is the mayor, who is elected at-large  (by all residents) to serve a four-year term and presides over Greer City Council meetings.  A mayor pro tempore is elected by council to serve the mayor’s role in his or her absence.

Council is assisted in its work by the Municipal Clerk. ***UPDATE LINK***

Elections

The City of Greer is governed by Greer City Council, with registered voters in each of the city’s six districts electing one councilman or councilwoman every four years (unless circumstances create the need for a special election) to represent their district.

The Mayor serves a four-year term and is elected through a citywide election as he or she represents all districts.

Voters also elect Commissioners of Public Works which, like Mayor, is an at-large office.

City of Greer municipal elections are non-partisan. Ballots list candidates but no declared affiliation with a political party.

Voters may also be called upon to determine an issue of importance to the city through a referendum.

Mayor Rick Danner

Rick Danner may have started out as the mayor of a small town when he took office in 2000, but today, he leads one of South Carolina’s fastest-growing cities. Greer still has room to grow, and Mayor Danner has a vision for how to do it the right way. The mayor says becoming a “City of Choice” requires investing, planning, and making a concerted effort to meet the needs of Greer’s increasingly diverse community.
