The City of Greer Fire Department is committed to promoting fire safety and prevention within the community. The department consists of more than 60 full-time members expertly trained in fire prevention, firefighting, rescue, hazardous material response, and emergency medical services. With four stations and state-of-the-art equipment, the department covers 25 square miles and responds to more than 5,000 calls annually. The Greer Fire Department holds an ISO Class 1 rating and is licensed Advanced Life Support Agency.
Each year, educational programs reach More than 6,000 people in Greer, from school children touring the stations to senior citizens benefiting from smoke detector installations. The department also supports the next generation of firefighters through its Explorer Program, where young people gain hands-on experience by riding trucks and attending training.
The Greer Fire Department’s history began in 1914 as the Greer Volunteer Fire Company Number 1, using a horse-drawn wagon to fight fires. In 1919, the city purchased its first motorized fire engine, and Sam O. Mahaffey became the first full-time paid firefighter. Today’s department continues its legacy of service and dedication to the community.
