Fire

The City of Greer Fire Department is committed to promoting fire safety and prevention within the community. The department consists of more than 60 full-time members expertly trained in fire prevention, firefighting, rescue, hazardous material response, and emergency medical services. With four stations and state-of-the-art equipment, the department covers 25 square miles and responds to more than 5,000 calls annually. The Greer Fire Department holds an ISO Class 1 rating and is licensed Advanced Life Support Agency.

Each year, educational programs reach More than 6,000 people in Greer, from school children touring the stations to senior citizens benefiting from smoke detector installations. The department also supports the next generation of firefighters through its Explorer Program, where young people gain hands-on experience by riding trucks and attending training. 

The Greer Fire Department’s history began in 1914 as the Greer Volunteer Fire Company Number 1, using a horse-drawn wagon to fight fires. In 1919, the city purchased its first motorized fire engine, and Sam O. Mahaffey became the first full-time paid firefighter. Today’s department continues its legacy of service and dedication to the community.

Headquarters

Located at 103 W. Poinsett St., the Greer Fire Department Headquarters serves as the central hub for the department's operations. This facility houses several key apparatus, including Engine 41, Tower 41, Battalion 41, QRV 41, and UTV 41. It also functions as the department's administrative center, with offices for the Fire Chief, Deputy Fire Chief, and Administrative Assistant. The headquarters plays a crucial role in coordinating emergency response and supporting the department’s administrative needs. Station 41 became operational in 1974.

ISO Certification

The Greer Fire Department has once again earned an ISO 1 rating, placing it among the top 1% of fire departments nationwide. This rating helps lower fire insurance premiums for residents and businesses in Greer. Achieved through excellent training, efficient emergency response, well-maintained equipment, and strong communication, the ISO 1 ranking demonstrates the department's commitment to providing the highest level of public safety. The new rating took effect on June 1, 2024.
