The Hispanic Latino Art Exhibit is on display now at the Edward R. Driggers City of Greer Center for the Arts.
“We had over 29 artist supply and there are 22 artists represented in the show. It’s very exciting and it’s a very diverse body of work,” said Cultural Arts Supervisor Robin Byouk.
Cultural Arts Supervisor Robin Byouk says she enlisted the help of several hispanic organizations to attract as many artists as possible.
“Because we don’t have the momentum of doing it every year I had to reach out to our partners within the community to help us spread the word,” Byouk said.
There’s also an opportunity to meet the artists during a reception on October 22 from 6 to 8 p.m. But that’s not all.
“Hispanic Latino heritage month during the event is a perfect time to have that artwork represented,” Byouk said.
The Center for the Arts will also be hosting its first Day of the Dead Celebration on November 2 from 2 to 7 p.m.
“We’re going to have face painting and crafts where you make marigold headbands. We’re going to have some dancers and a mariachi band and we’re going to show the movie Coco and then we have another band and we’re going to have some food vendors and a small artist market,” Byouk said.
Byouk says she wants people to enjoy a cultural experience…
“Day of the dead los Martos is about remembering your family members”
… while also learning the real meaning of the holiday.
“Find out what the meanings of different things are, why marigolds, why butterflies,” Byouk says.
She hopes the community takes this as an opportunity to learn more about their neighbors.
“We don’t look the same we don’t believe in the same things we don’t observe the same religions and to share that with the community and make it free to the community so that you can come in and you can learn and you can accept, and you can understand.”
