Greer Police officers headed to Chandler Creek Elementary School to connect with kindergartners and teach them some safety tips.
“Myself and a few other officers presented Eddie the eagle which is a gun safety program which has been around for quite some time,” Sgt. Ashley Wright said.
Sgt. Wright is with Community Outreach at Greer Police and often brings messages like this one into the schools.
“I love coming into the schools and either presenting in a classroom or just having a few minutes with kiddos at lunchtime just to interact and have fun and build relationships,” Wright said.
This particular program teaches children what to do if they encounter a firearm.
“Eddie the eagle teaches the kids to stop, don’t touch, run away, and tell a grownup,” Wright said.
And even though it’s a lesson they may never need to use, it’s important to explain.
“We like to make sure kids are prepared and know what to do if they ever encounter a situation like this. Even though the possibility may be slim we want to make sure they’re prepared,” Wright said.
And, it helps the students get to know the officers.
“So the kids learn that we’re human and we’re nice to talk to and we’re fun and can be silly right alongside them. And that they can come to us if they ever need help,” Wright said.
