Demolition is in progress on the Hood Road fire station and training tower.
“After the opening of the new fire station, we started the demolition of the hood Road property to make way for the public safety training facility,” Deputy Fire Chief Josh Holzheimer said.
Deputy Chief Josh Holzheimer says it’s all part of the process to make way for a state-of-the-art public safety training facility.
“The city has grown fast and you’re trying to a lot of the times play catch-up to try and meet those needs,” Holzheimer said.
The new facility is part of the ForGreer initiative and will create a dedicated space for the Greer Fire Department and Greer Police Department to train.
“For us to be able to serve and train to be better efficient to serve them,”Holzheimer said.
He says the department has grown from 12 people per shift, to now having 19 per shift.
“So we’re growing rapidly in the city is growing rapidly, and we need to be able to meet those demands,” he said.
And both departments require extensive training annually.
“It’s thousands and thousands of hours a year “
Even though the function of the new facility will be focused on public safety, Hozlheimer says it ultimately effects the city as a whole.
“It’s all about team Greer, and how we can make team career better and public safety is a huge part but us being up-to-date and and trained help helps us help. Public Services helps us help parks and rec and it helps us all deliver a better service to the citizens,” Holzheimer said.
