As the holiday season is in full swing, so are criminals looking to cause some Grinch-like chaos.
“It’s a prime opportunity for individuals who are looking to steal packages or gifts, breaking into vehicles,” Lt. Chris Forrester said.
Lt. Chris Forrester with the Greer Police Department has some tips for when you’re shopping in stores for holiday gifts.
“Citizens should be mindful of where their purses and wallets are. It’s always keep them attached to you,” Forrester said.
Don’t forget to protect those purchases too.
“Put your packages in the rear cargo space of your vehicle or your trunk and lock those up as you go from one store to another,” Forrester said.
When it comes to shopping online, Forrester suggests making sure you are on a legitimate and secure website.
“Putting in your payment for a secure website that you’re making a payment on,” Forrester said.
To protect those orders once they get to your door, he suggests having a secure place to store packages away from the prying eyes of porch pirates.
“That way the packages are not sitting right out in front for someone to ride or walk by your home and see that you have packages out front,” Forrester said.
Use caution when you’re disposing of boxes that may show your ned favorite gifts.
“It’s easier to break down boxes and store them in the trashcan or take them to the dump,” Forrester said.
Finally, be careful what you post on social media if you plan to be out of town.
“They’re looking online and they see that you’re going out of town for several days over the holidays. It’s always a chance for someone to know that you’re not home and breaking,” Forrester said.
