Children and families headed to Kids Planet will now have the opportunity to practice reading skills while enjoying the park.

“One of the things that we wanted to promote the library is bringing the books to the locations where they might not see it already,” Youth Services Librarian Nathan Kelley said.

Nathan Kelley is a Youth Services Librarian with the Greenville County Library System and helped set up a Storywalk at Kids Planet recently.

“What a Storywalk is is it’s a synthesis of basic literacy skills as well as a way to interact with stories beyond just the library or the classroom. It’s bringing the story out where people are,” Kelley said.

Pages of a book that’s available at the library are laid out on signage along a walkway in the park so families can experience the story together.

“We take that book it out into narrative that you see several signs going down the walkway alongside that we also put activities on the boards, so you’re not just reading with the child along the way, but you’re interacting as well,” Kelley said.

This is the second Storywalk installation the library system has done—the first being in downtown Greenville.

“Our first book today is Run Wild which pairs very well with what the kids are doing here already,” Kelley said.

The story will be changed every several months to give children and families a different book as the seasons change.

“Come as a group come as a big crowd and do it together,” Kelley said.

The Greer StoryWalk is sponsored by the Friends of the Greenville County Library System.
