October is Crime Prevention Month and the Greer Police Department wants you to think about things you can do to stay safe.

“Just give us a time to give some good tips of things that we may not think about on a daily basis just a citizens,” Lt. Chris Forrester said.

Lt. Forrester says car break-ins are one crime that can be prevented with some extra care.

“Locking the doors, removing valuable items, such as computers, phones, spare car keys that may leave inside the vehicle or firearms,” Lt. Forrester said.

And, pay attention to your surroundings.

“Park in well lit areas at night if you live in an apartment complex or add some lighting to your driveway is or install some cameras,” Lt. Forrester said.

When it comes to warming your car up or leaving it running while you go into a store, he says to think twice.

“Leaving your keys inside your vehicle while your vehicle is running and unlocked is always a prime time for individuals to come by and steal vehicles,” Lt. Forrester said.

As we head toward the holiday season, porch pirates could be looking to steal your packages.

“If you details specific locations where delivery services complete those items at the rear, if you’re home or at the back door or if there’s somewhere that you have that you can hide those,” Lt. Forrester said.”

With Halloween just around the corner everyone can be taking precautions.

“We want to make sure the kids are wearing bright colors that they have flashlights walk in groups,” he said.

Lt. Forrester says it’s up to everyone to have a safe and fun night.

“Make sure that you’re careful about especially pulling into neighborhoods where there might be more trick-or-treating that’s taking place,” Lt. Forrester said.
