Awnings and canopies shall be designed and constructed to withstand wind, lateral and live loads as required by Chapter 16 of the IBC. Detailed plans must be sealed by a SC Engineer and submitted for approval.
Structural members shall be protected to prevent deterioration.
Awnings shall have frames of noncombustible materials.
Canopy material shall be constructed of a rigid framework with an approved covering that meets the fire propagation performance criteria of NFPA 701 or has a flame spread index not greater than 25 when tested in accordance with ASTM 84 or UL 723.
Inspections are required for final installation.
Permits are not required to re-cover existing awning/canopies.
If the awning or canopy includes graphics or signage, a sign permit will be required for zoning approval.
